social profit canvas

Starting point for social profit and value

Authors: Marc Vermeulen & Anke Vroomen
with contributions from Mark Wolbert & Jaap Hoenderdos

Organizations in the public sector should be of value to society. Foundations, government, corporations, or associations: they all aim to achieve social profit for tenants, clients, patients, or students.

What is truly valuable and in how do public sector organizations contribute to it?

we often know the costs of something,

but not the value or worth of it.

In the first part of this book, Marc Vermeulen and Anke Vroomen describe the background and developments of the welfare state and Public Value thinking. Attention is given to the work of Harvard professor Mark Moore, which has had a significant influence on the thinking about and development of public value.

In the second part, the Social Profit Canvas model is introduced. This is a model developed in collaboration with Mark Wolbert and Jaap Hoenderdos of WHISE. The Social Profit Canvas provides insight and guidance for steering. It is a model through which social profit can be created and made visible.

The final chapter delves deeper into how we can collectively take steps towards a new equilibrium, where our joint efforts make a positive contribution to societal issues.

Marc Vermeulen is a professor of strategy for non-profit organizations at TIAS School for Business and Society | Tilburg University.
